POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Undergraduate/graduate degree, high school degree, or GED

 

Experience:  Requires activities in the community through volunteerism with neighbors/ relatives and within neighborhood programs and activities.  Experience in garnering low income resources and in improving existing systems and approaches for supporting low income communities.

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates interest in being a part of the AmeriCorps VISTA National Service Program.
  • Have knowledge and/or willingness to learn and experience community activities.
  • Strong interest in providing service to and strengthening disadvantaged North City communities through providing intensive individual and team efforts in a variety of work environments.
  • Demonstrates ability to express her/himself that can be used to address small groups from children to seniors.
  • Demonstrates ability to cooperate and collaborate with peers and persons from varying backgrounds.
  • Shows strong desire and previous efforts to further career through education and/or training programs.

 

Residency and Transportation Requirement:

1.   Would prefer if candidate has had personal history with College Hill Neighborhood.

2.   Can reach project sites on time.

FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Function within a team to get things done.
  • Involve neighbors through outreach and discussions of the program.
  • Involve and interact in a leadership role with neighbors through surveys, clean-ups, human services, assessments, planning, and project activities.
  • VISTA would work with neighborhood leaders on ascertaining skill developments that would be most helpful to build a strong, engaged community.
  • VISTA would be responsible to develop College curriculum by finding resources and training modules, develop recruiting methods and a training structure for Resident Trainers to facilitate the course, and widen sustainable resources to both assist in the training and pay for costs.
  • VISTAs would assist in conducting a community baseline as well as developing coalitions to address community-voiced issues. VISTAs would also be used for follow-up data gathering after interventions have been made for comparison purposes.
  • Supporting coalitions and low-income families by resource development
  • VISTA Member would be responsible for looking at the existing program structure and helping to reinforce the processes, use suggestions from the community to add new creative exchange opportunities, and assure a strong, sustainable system.

 

Marginal Functions

 

Participate with events and activities of Grace Hill programs and special celebrations

 

Supervises:  Through leadership with neighborhood and community volunteers such as youth and elders.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: 

  • Physical activities in cold and heat depending on weather and need to know how to dress to be comfortable
  • Good visual acuity required to conduct activities safely.
  • Physical demands include ability to lift 40 pounds, use a variety of carpentry and ground equipment, willingness to plant correctly and weed, bending repeatedly to pick up trash, ride a bike for a distance of 24 miles

 

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions:

  • Physical activities in cold and hot weather
  • Normal office and meeting room conditions
  • May work at more than one Grace Hill site as requested; site assignments may be changed periodically.
