St. Louis, MO -- The Missouri Community Service Commission presented the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Award to Grace Hill AmeriCorps and their partners, the United Way of Greater St. Louis and AmeriCorps St. Louis.

The project, designated best in Missouri, established the first annual citywide service event. More than 1,000 volunteers, many led in teams by AmeriCorps members, provided services to 12 schools, service centers, churches and neighborhoods.

“ Our groundbreaking collaborative effort has established the first annual city-wide service event and is truly a major accomplishment.   Many other cities have coordinated service events on Martin Luther King Service Day.  Now St. Louis too has the capacity to host thousands of volunteers to exemplify the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We look forward to next year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Service to grow in capacity and scope.”  Doug Eller, Director of Community Development, Grace Hill Settlement House.

The United Way, which helps in funding Grace Hill and a network of nearly 200 other quality agencies that work to build a healthier community and region, engaged volunteers in service projects and civic dialogue throughout the St. Louis region in its project, “Live the Dream, Live United.”

The Missouri Community Service Commission presented the award at the Annual Celebration of Volunteerism and Service, April 29, 2010, following the Life after AmeriCorps seminars.

Grace Hill was presented with the same award in 2008 for its partnership effort to clean Martin Luther King Boulevard.
