Smoking Cessation

The Assistance and Self-Help to End Smoking (ASHES) Program is funded through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Care Partners. The goals of the program include increasing client assessment of tobacco abuse in the health centers, providing assistance to clients who are ready to quit smoking, and providing education to the community about the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke. In 2001, over 90% of client visits to the health center had documented assessment of smoking status (asking if a client smokes and if so, asking if they are ready to quit). Additionally, program staff (including the coordinator, 2 health care coaches, and one AmeriCorps member) conducted 443 visits with clients who were ready to quit smoking.  Smoking support groups have also been established and they meet on a regular basis.

If you are interested in quitting smoking or learning more about the ASHES Program, please call (314) 539-9574.
