Mammography and Pap Program

The Mammogram and Pap Program (MAPP) Team is committed to educating women about the importance of screening and early detection of both breast and cervical cancer. In addition, the team has implemented strategies to ensure that women have screening and early detection available to them so that lives can be saved. Outreach and clinical practice resulted in 794 women receiving mammograms at Grace Hill in the year 2001.

The MAPP Team obtains their referrals from the Outreach Workers, the Health To Go Van Staff who are out recruiting all eligible women, from women who previously had a mammogram/pap smear and are currently due for their annual check-up, and health providers who refer women that are due for a mammogram or Pap smear. The MAPP Team members also attend health fairs, visit nail and beauty salons, have Wellness Days and leave flyers at grocery stores, Laundromats and other local businesses frequented by women.

Outreach at the beauty salons consists of educating the shop owners and operators with information about the MAPP Program. The owners and operators in turn provide this information to clients while servicing them. Another very successful outreach method are the Wellness Days held at the Water Tower Health Center, designed for women who require extra support or are receiving a mammogram for the first time.  During Wellness Days, patients are greeted by the health coach and escorted from the beginning of their visit to the time they exit the Health Center.

The MAPP Team has also reached out to the growing population of Hispanic women in the St. Louis area and has a bilingual coach to better serve this population.

Future goals for the program include: the performance of 1,000 mammograms per year; expand the number of community outreach sites, utilize cancer survivors to reach out to other women, expand support services and collaborate with the Breakfast Club.
