POSITION TITLE:                   Health Educator 

 

REPORTS TO:             Health Education and Communications Manager

 

STATUS/HOURS:                     Regular/Full-time (Evenings and Weekends as scheduled)  

 

SALARY RANGE:                    $ 27,575.00 - $ 37,307.00 Annually

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Promote, maintain, and improve individual and community health by assisting individuals and communities to adopt healthy behaviors. Collect and analyze data to identify community needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments. May also serve as a resource to assist individuals, other professionals, or the community, and may administer fiscal resources for health education programs.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in health education, public health education, or a related field.

 

Experience: Minimum of three years experience in community health/public health education or related work setting.

 

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:

 

1. Knowledge of health education theory and principles; Knowledge of public health terminology, methodology, organization, and practices.  Knowledge of strategic planning methods and practices.

2.  Ability to teach health issues and lead discussions for large or small groups. 

3.  Ability to evaluate programs through the use of methods that indicate shifts in health status.

4.  Ability to adapt to public health education practices to the needs of diverse population.

5.  Knowledge of budgeting, fiscal management, grant writing, and developing community resources.

6.  Good organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills.

7.  Strong computer skills.

8.  Knowledge of emergency, first aid and CPR procedures; Ability to use first aid screening equipment.

9.  Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations.

 

Residency and Transportation Requirement:

 

1.       Preference given to residents of a Grace Hill service area.

2.       Must possess a valid driver’s license and automobile with insurance coverage as required by the State of Missouri.

 

License(s)/Certification(s) Required: CPR Certification required.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

 

Essential Functions

 

1.       Plans, coordinates and evaluates healthy lifestyle programs.  Researches and assess issues in targeted communicates and populations.  Identifies special educational needs and high-risk members with the target populations.

2.       Collaborates with partner agencies in developing educational materials, curriculum and presentations adequate for the target community, clients and appropriate for the program’s goals.  Prepares presentations and proposals for educational programs and projects and implements social and lifestyle support system in the target populations that promote healthier lifestyles.

3.       Briefs team members on new informational and educational materials and resources available so they are adequately incorporated into other health center programs.  Trains outreach staff, volunteers and others.

4.       Promotes educational programs focused on environmental and lifestyle changes that foster improved lifestyle habits, environmental and other health activity patterns. 

5.       Provides oral and written status reports.  Continuously assess success of the program and proposes changes to the plan to accommodate special circumstances and to ensure continuous program success.

6.       Prepares and maintain program-related statistical and written reports.

7.       Researches health topics and develop teaching aids to assist self and other staff in direct work with the target population.

8.       Prepare written materials for distribution to the community; updates information as needed.

9.       Attends and participates in staff meetings.  Share input and ideas for program improvement, as well as other department functions.  Attends local, regional, and state meetings and conferences.

10.   Assists in the preparation of new grant proposals.  Prepares grant renewals in a timely manner.  Provide grant administration support by maintaining records, gather data, assist in implementing grant funded-programs and oversee compliance with grant requirements. 

11.   Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Marginal Functions

 

1.       Procures supplies as needed for special events.

2.       Makes presentations related to health issues in the community upon request.
